The UN Irish began in August 1992 as the Crusty Loaf Bakery, opened by Rosemary O'Connell from County Monaghan and her Chiang Mai husband Daeng. A chalkboard reading 'The Irish Pub' came later, and in 2003, with no Irish owners left, the partners added 'United Nations' to the name. Australian Sandy Cullen and his wife Boom still run it.

Guinness and other beers and ciders are on tap, and the menu covers Western and Thai pub food in generous portions, from a full Irish breakfast to a well-liked bean burger. The bakery next door sells pies, quiches and fresh bread to take away.

Four screens, two on each floor, show rugby, football and cricket, and the pub sponsors local rugby and cricket teams. The Thursday quiz has run since October 1999 and starts at 8pm, with a 50-baht entry. There is live music on Sundays in high season, and a guesthouse across the soi.
