The Penny Black

Named after the world's first postage stamp, The Penny Black recreates a Victorian London boozer right on the Singapore River at Boat Quay. It survived a threatened closure in 2021 and remains a fixture for City bankers and homesick Brits, with an indoor bar plus riverside alfresco tables.

The draught line-up includes Guinness, Kilkenny and Old Speckled Hen (a rare find locally), alongside Strongbow cider and the usual lagers. On the food side, look for fish and chips with mushy peas, beef and Guinness pie, cottage pie and a traditional roast.

It is a popular spot for watching big games, gets lively and crowded at weekends, and drinks are priced at the higher end of the Boat Quay scale.
